On a cool breezy winter day while walking the Boulevard along Venetian Bay, I noticed a gentleman walking in front of me who appeared to be picking up litter.

As I approached him, I saw exactly what he was doing. I stopped for a moment, introduced myself, and thanked him for caring so much about our neighborhood.

His name was Charlie, and he is a seasonal resident of the Terraces condominium, hence the name “Charles of the Terraces”.

Charlie is clearly a resident who deeply cares about his community, the kind of resident we like to write about in our monthly GSAC newsletter.

Charlie purchased his home at the terraces five years ago after being a seasonal renter for many years in the third street area downtown.

He and his wife reside in Naples six months of the year (October through May) and then head to their Fairport, NY home near Rochester, NY.

Charlie enjoys walking and desired to accomplish something while doing so.

By the way, he continues his efforts at litter control while at his summer home in Fairport.

While on litter patrol on the Boulevard, Charlie states that the most common litter found is cigarette butts and fishing line. Charlie did say that overall, our neighborhood is a very clean place to live.

Charlie also appreciates all the “thank yous” he receives from neighbors and the “god bless yous” he receives daily.

Charlie’s contribution to the Naples community does not end there; he is also a Boat Captain at the Conservancy, conducting tours through the mangroves and teaching conservation.

He has the opportunity to frequently conduct tours with school children and always emphasizes the need to pick up litter and ensure it does not reach the water.

Charlie will be departing for Fairport shortly, so let’s all pick up where he left off, let’s all pitch in to keep our neighborhood clean.

If you see Charlie on his daily walk, say hello and give him a big thank you.

Thank you, Charlie. You are a terrific neighbor, and we appreciate all you do.
