If you sustained damages, including special assessments from your condo association, from Hurricane Ian and were not able to claim a casualty loss on your federal tax return because the loss did not exceed 10% of your adjusted gross income, there is still hope.

With a vote of 382-7, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 5863 on May 21, 2024 which would enable owners to file an amended return to claim those losses.

That bill is now in the Senate Committee on Finance. It is unsure when it will come to the floor for a vote but hopefully soon.

GSAC has been following this closely, meeting with key members of Senator Scott’s staff and sending a letter of support. The City of Naples will also be sending a letter of support.

It’s very important Senator Scott and Senator Rubio hears from residents as well. Please take a few minutes to let them know you support H.R.5863, the Disaster Tax Relief Act. Click through the buttons below and complete the “opinion” forms.
