The Board of the Moorings Property Owners Association (MPOA) is surveying its members in an effort to ascertain a preference for intersection improvements at Harbour Drive and Crayton Road.
A fatal accident in November created “a whole new conversation about this intersection,” said MPOA chairman Cliff Holland at an MPOA Safety Town Hall on April 8.
As reported last month, some residents in the Moorings think safety data makes a compelling case for the implementation of the Roundabout originally planned for the intersection. Despite a fully funded grant for its construction, Council rejected the roundabout configuration in January 2023. Instead they opted to replace the existing span-wire assembly with mast arms and pedestrian and bike safety improvements.
City staff continue to proceed with the mast arm solution, the design of which is almost complete and currently out for bid.
“The mast arm upgrade will be presented to City Council next month as part of the budget discussions,” confirmed Deputy City Engineer Alison Bickett. “Since it is out for bid, the mast arm could likely be installed later this year provided all is ultimately approved and there are no hurdles with the supplies.”
Holland admits convincing City Council to reverse their original decision will be “an uphill battle.”
He said the MPOA’s plan was to survey residents and land on a direction based on feedback. “If the community decides that we think a roundabout is right for this intersection then that is the direction we will take.”
